It's Not Just Scenery: The Physical Sciences of Grand Canyon
Thursday, March 1, 2012 by Deanna Greco
Deanna Greco, Physical Science Program Manager at Grand Canyon, will discuss the recent development of the physical science program at Grand Canyon National Park. The management of physical science resources, such as landscape features, is less widely understood by the public than that of plants and animals. While some may think that such features are merely unchanging scenery, they are dynamic resources that require preservation and management. Greco will give a brief history of physical science management at Grand Canyon, and share some of the program's new directions and emphasis areas.

Keep It Wild: Managing Wilderness in Grand Canyon National Park
Thursday, April 5, 2012 by Linda Jalbert
More than 93 percent of Grand Canyon National Park's area qualifies for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the NPS has a Final Wilderness Recommendation in place, the congressional wilderness designation process has not occurred. National Park Service Management Policy requires that all qualifying park areas be managed in the same manner as designated wilderness. Linda Jalbert, who has served as the Grand Canyon Wilderness Coordinator for nearly 10 years, will discuss the challenges and benefit of managing Grand Canyon wilderness.

Last Great Chase: Harvey Butchart's Summit List and Grand Canyon's Indelible Climbers
Sunday, May 13, 2012 by Mathieu Brown
In September 1958, two climbers embarked on a five-day journey, reaching the summit of Zoroaster Temple and pioneering what would become Grand Canyon's classic climb. The Zoroaster ascent was part of a series of climbs by various parties, all of whom were bound together by a sense of adventure and exploration. These climbs and a summit list, compiled by record keeper and renowned hiker Harvey Butchart, drew a small cadre of desert rats into the depths of the canyon. Join Mathieu Brown for stories of conquering Grand Canyon summits and a glimpse into the artistry of climbing in the canyon.
